How Long Does It Take?
Typical timing: 30-60 days.
TGL Recruiter tip: Processing estimates change with fingerprint delays, missing documents, and application volume. Confirm the current timeline with the Board before promising a start date — and always start early.
Step-by-Step Licensing Process
✓ Alabama is an eNLC compact state. If your primary state of residence is also compact and you hold a multistate license, you can practice in Alabama without obtaining a separate Alabama license.
Permanent License — Endorsement
- Create an account and submit your endorsement application through the Alabama Board of Nursing online portal and pay the $100 fee.
- Request license verification through Nursys from your current state(s) of licensure. Alabama participates in Nursys.
- Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check. Alabama uses the Fieldprint system — schedule an appointment at a Fieldprint Alabama location.
- Complete any additional documentation required by the Board, such as documentation of any prior disciplinary action or criminal history.
- Allow 30–60 days for processing. Track your application status through the Board's online portal.
Temporary License
- Alabama offers a temporary permit valid for 120 days while your permanent license is pending.
- Apply for the temporary permit at the same time as your permanent endorsement application.
- You may begin working once the temporary permit is issued — verify the permit is active before your start date.
TGL Recruiter tip: Start the licensing process as early as possible — especially for non-compact states, which can take 8–12 weeks. Your TGL recruiter will track your application status and help you time your assignment start date.
Fees
The endorsement application fee is $100. A temporary permit costs an additional $25. License renewal every two years is $100. Fingerprint/background check fees are separate and payable to Fieldprint.
Fees change. Always verify current amounts at the official Alabama Board of Nursing website before applying.
License Renewal
Alabama RN licenses renew every two years on the last day of the nurse's birth month. No continuing education hours are required for renewal, though the Board may change this — verify current requirements at renewal time. Renewal fee is $100.
Important Notes for Travel Nurses
- Alabama is a compact (eNLC) state — nurses with a multistate license from their primary state of residence may practice in Alabama without a separate license.
- Your application is valid for one year. If all requirements are not met within that window, you must reapply and repay the fee.
- Nurses with prior disciplinary action or criminal history should contact the Board before applying — the review process adds time.
