How Long Does It Take?

Typical timing: 4-6 weeks.

TGL Recruiter tip: Processing estimates change with fingerprint delays, missing documents, and application volume. Confirm the current timeline with the Board before promising a start date — and always start early.

Step-by-Step Licensing Process

ℹ Alaska is a non-compact state. You must obtain a separate Alaska RN license to practice there, regardless of your home state compact status.

Permanent License — Endorsement

  1. Submit your endorsement application online through the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing portal and pay the $200 fee.
  2. Request license verification via Nursys from your original state of licensure. Alaska participates in Nursys.
  3. Submit fingerprints for an FBI and state criminal background check. Alaska requires a LiveScan or hard-card fingerprint submission — instructions are provided with your application.
  4. Provide your NCLEX transcripts if requested by the Board.
  5. Processing typically takes 4–6 weeks after all materials are received.

Temporary License

  1. Alaska does not routinely issue temporary licenses to nurses licensed in other states. Contact the Board directly to confirm whether any provisional authorization applies to your situation.
TGL Recruiter tip: Start the licensing process as early as possible — especially for non-compact states, which can take 8–12 weeks. Your TGL recruiter will track your application status and help you time your assignment start date.

Fees

Endorsement application fee is $200. There is no standard temporary license fee as Alaska does not routinely issue them. License renewal every two years costs $200. Background check fees are additional.

Fees change. Always verify current amounts at the official Alaska Board of Nursing website before applying.

License Renewal

Alaska RN licenses renew biennially (every two years). Renewal requires 30 hours of continuing education per renewal period. Renewal fee is $200.

Important Notes for Travel Nurses

  • Alaska is a non-compact state. Every nurse must obtain a separate Alaska license regardless of home state.
  • Processing can slow significantly in summer months — start your application at least 8 weeks before your assignment start date.
  • The Board's online system may require additional verification steps; have your NCLEX candidate number and original state license number ready.
