How Long Does It Take?

Typical timing: 30-60 days.

TGL Recruiter tip: Processing estimates change with fingerprint delays, missing documents, and application volume. Confirm the current timeline with the Board before promising a start date — and always start early.

Step-by-Step Licensing Process

✓ Iowa is an eNLC compact state. Nurses holding a multistate license from a compact primary state may practice in Iowa without a separate license.

Permanent License — Endorsement

  1. Apply online through the Iowa Board of Nursing online portal and pay the $96 fee.
  2. Request license verification via Nursys. Iowa participates in Nursys.
  3. Submit fingerprints for a background check — instructions are provided with your application approval.
  4. Processing typically takes 30–60 days after all materials are received.

Temporary License

  1. Iowa issues a temporary permit valid for 90 days while your endorsement application is processed.
  2. Request the temporary permit through the Board's online portal at the time of your endorsement application.
TGL Recruiter tip: Start the licensing process as early as possible — especially for non-compact states, which can take 8–12 weeks. Your TGL recruiter will track your application status and help you time your assignment start date.

Fees

Endorsement fee is $96. Temporary permit is included. Biennial renewal is $99. Background check fees are separate.

Fees change. Always verify current amounts at the official Iowa Board of Nursing website before applying.

License Renewal

Iowa RN licenses renew biennially. Renewal requires 36 hours of continuing education per renewal period, including specific requirements for particular practice areas. Renewal fee is $99.

Important Notes for Travel Nurses

  • Iowa is a compact (eNLC) state — nurses with a multistate license from a compact home state may practice without endorsement.
  • Iowa has a higher CE requirement (36 hours) than most states — confirm requirements before your renewal date.
  • The Board's website provides a license lookup tool that facilities use to verify licenses.
