How Long Does It Take?
Typical timing: 8-10 weeks.
TGL Recruiter tip: Processing estimates change with fingerprint delays, missing documents, and application volume. Confirm the current timeline with the Board before promising a start date — and always start early.
Step-by-Step Licensing Process
ℹ Massachusetts is a non-compact state. A separate Massachusetts RN license is required to practice there.
Permanent License — Endorsement
- Submit your endorsement application through the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing online system and pay the $225 fee.
- Request license verification via Nursys. Massachusetts participates in Nursys.
- Complete a CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) background check — Massachusetts requires this for all applicants. Instructions are provided with your application.
- Submit transcripts or documentation of nursing education if requested.
- Processing typically takes 8–10 weeks after all materials are received.
Temporary License
- Massachusetts offers a temporary permit valid for 90 days for endorsement applicants.
- Request the temporary permit through the Board's online system alongside your endorsement application.
TGL Recruiter tip: Start the licensing process as early as possible — especially for non-compact states, which can take 8–12 weeks. Your TGL recruiter will track your application status and help you time your assignment start date.
Fees
Endorsement fee is $225. Temporary permit is included. Biennial renewal is $165. CORI background check fees are separate.
Fees change. Always verify current amounts at the official Massachusetts Board of Nursing website before applying.
License Renewal
Massachusetts RN licenses renew biennially. Renewal requires no continuing education hours (verify current requirements). Renewal fee is $165.
Important Notes for Travel Nurses
- Massachusetts is a non-compact state — a separate Massachusetts license is required regardless of home state.
- The CORI check is specific to Massachusetts and separate from standard fingerprint background checks — allow extra time.
- Massachusetts is home to many high-acuity facilities; license verification is closely monitored.
