How Long Does It Take?
Typical timing: 6-8 weeks.
TGL Recruiter tip: Processing estimates change with fingerprint delays, missing documents, and application volume. Confirm the current timeline with the Board before promising a start date — and always start early.
Step-by-Step Licensing Process
ℹ Minnesota is a non-compact state. A separate Minnesota RN license is required to practice there.
Permanent License — Endorsement
- Apply online through the Minnesota Board of Nursing portal and pay the $105 fee.
- Request license verification via Nursys. Minnesota participates in Nursys.
- Complete a background check — Minnesota uses the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). Out-of-state applicants may use an authorized FBI provider.
- Processing typically takes 6–8 weeks.
Temporary License
- Minnesota does not issue temporary licenses for endorsement applicants. Plan your assignment start date around the 6–8 week processing window.
TGL Recruiter tip: Start the licensing process as early as possible — especially for non-compact states, which can take 8–12 weeks. Your TGL recruiter will track your application status and help you time your assignment start date.
Fees
Endorsement fee is $105. No temporary license available. Biennial renewal is $75. Background check fees are separate.
Fees change. Always verify current amounts at the official Minnesota Board of Nursing website before applying.
License Renewal
Minnesota RN licenses renew biennially. Renewal requires no continuing education (verify current requirements). Renewal fee is $75.
Important Notes for Travel Nurses
- Minnesota is a non-compact state — a separate Minnesota license is required regardless of home state.
- No temporary license is available — confirm your permanent license is active before starting any assignment.
- The Mayo Clinic and other major Minnesota health systems closely verify licenses — allow full processing time.
