How Long Does It Take?
Typical timing: 6-8 weeks.
TGL Recruiter tip: Processing estimates change with fingerprint delays, missing documents, and application volume. Confirm the current timeline with the Board before promising a start date — and always start early.
Step-by-Step Licensing Process
ℹ New York is a non-compact state. A separate New York RN license is required to practice there.
Permanent License — Endorsement
- Submit your endorsement application online through the New York Office of the Professions (OP) and pay the $143 fee.
- Request license verification via Nursys. New York participates in Nursys.
- Complete a fingerprint-based background check — New York uses the DCJS fingerprinting system through an approved vendor.
- Provide a current photo (passport-style) with your application.
- Processing typically takes 6–8 weeks. The New York OP handles high volumes — allow the full window before following up.
Temporary License
- New York does not issue traditional temporary licenses. However, registered nurses from other states may apply for a Limited Permit, which allows practice under supervision while the full endorsement is processed.
- Apply for the Limited Permit through the OP online system simultaneously with your endorsement application.
- The Limited Permit is valid for one year or until your license is issued, whichever comes first.
TGL Recruiter tip: Start the licensing process as early as possible — especially for non-compact states, which can take 8–12 weeks. Your TGL recruiter will track your application status and help you time your assignment start date.
Fees
Endorsement fee is $143. The Limited Permit (temporary authorization) is an additional $35. License renewal every three years is $65. Background check fees are separate.
Fees change. Always verify current amounts at the official New York Board of Nursing website before applying.
License Renewal
New York RN licenses renew every three years (not two). No continuing education is required (verify current requirements). Renewal fee is $65.
Important Notes for Travel Nurses
- New York is a non-compact state — a separate New York license is required regardless of home state.
- New York renews on a three-year cycle, not two — check your specific expiration date.
- The Limited Permit requires supervision arrangements at the facility — confirm this with your hiring manager before your start date.
