Typical timing: 60-90 days.
TGL Recruiter tip: Processing estimates change with fingerprint delays, missing documents, and application volume. Confirm the current timeline with the Board before promising a start date — and always start early.
Step-by-Step Licensing Process
ℹ Washington, D.C. is a non-compact jurisdiction. A separate DC RN license is required to practice there.
Permanent License — Endorsement
- Apply online through the DC Board of Nursing (DC Health) portal and pay the $200 fee.
- Request license verification via Nursys. DC participates in Nursys.
- Complete a fingerprint-based background check — DC uses the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) fingerprinting system or an authorized provider.
- Submit a copy of your nursing school diploma or transcript if requested.
- Processing typically takes 60–90 days — DC is one of the slower jurisdictions and often requires follow-up.
Temporary License
- DC offers a temporary permit valid for 90 days while your endorsement application is processed.
- Request the temporary permit with your endorsement application through DC Health.
- Given DC's 60–90 day processing window, having an active temporary permit is particularly important.
TGL Recruiter tip: Start the licensing process as early as possible — especially for non-compact states, which can take 8–12 weeks. Your TGL recruiter will track your application status and help you time your assignment start date.
License Renewal
DC RN licenses renew biennially. Renewal requires 24 hours of continuing education per renewal period. Renewal fee is $75.
Important Notes for Travel Nurses
- Washington, D.C. is a non-compact jurisdiction — a separate DC license is required regardless of home state.
- Processing can take 60–90 days — do not accept a DC assignment start without confirmed licensure.
- Georgetown, George Washington University Hospital, and Children's National are major DC placement sites.
