How Long Does It Take?

Typical timing: 6-8 weeks.

TGL Recruiter tip: Processing estimates change with fingerprint delays, missing documents, and application volume. Confirm the current timeline with the Board before promising a start date — and always start early.

Step-by-Step Licensing Process

ℹ Wisconsin is a non-compact state. A separate Wisconsin RN license is required to practice there.

Permanent License — Endorsement

  1. Apply online through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) portal and pay the $82 fee.
  2. Request license verification via Nursys. Wisconsin participates in Nursys.
  3. Complete a fingerprint-based background check — Wisconsin uses an authorized Livescan vendor. Out-of-state applicants may use an authorized FBI provider.
  4. Processing typically takes 6–8 weeks.

Temporary License

  1. Wisconsin does not issue temporary licenses for endorsement applicants. Plan your assignment start around the 6–8 week processing window.
TGL Recruiter tip: Start the licensing process as early as possible — especially for non-compact states, which can take 8–12 weeks. Your TGL recruiter will track your application status and help you time your assignment start date.

Fees

Endorsement fee is $82. No temporary license available. Biennial renewal is $82. Background check fees are separate.

Fees change. Always verify current amounts at the official Wisconsin Board of Nursing website before applying.

License Renewal

Wisconsin RN licenses renew biennially. No continuing education is required (verify current requirements). Renewal fee is $82.

Important Notes for Travel Nurses

  • Wisconsin is a non-compact state — a separate Wisconsin license is required regardless of home state.
  • No temporary license is available — do not accept a Wisconsin assignment before your license is confirmed active.
  • Madison and Milwaukee health systems are common travel nurse placements.
